Thinking about getting into surfing? Always wanted to try but didn't know where to start? Looking for your first surfboard?
We have put together some information that you should consider which we hope will help you. The most important piece of advice I can give though, is to go with what you feel inside is the correct decision. If you are happy with the surfboard then that will be the right one for you!
The first question we often hear from first time surfers or people returning to surfing is, "what size surfboard should I ride?". The questions should really be what type of surfer are you and where are you going to be surfing?

If you are a beginner then the size of the surfboard is going to be absolutely critical. I recommend going with a longer, wider, and thicker board. A board much smaller than 7 foot is often too small for a first time surfer. The other important dimensions are the width and thickness to allow the surfboard to be paddled and stay stable. Float and stability are imperative to learning how to surf!
And next is often, "Should I buy a used surfboard, a foam surfboard, a glass surfboard, or an epoxy surfboard?". And,"Why is there such a difference in price?".
You will always manage to damage a surfboard when learning to surf, don’t worry it happens to everyone! Soft surfboards are relatively inexpensive and if you are really not sure if you are going to surf a lot then it could be a good starting point. But the draw backs to foam boards are that they don’t give you much performance and if you start surfing a lot you will find yourself progressing quickly and need a hard surfboard quite fast. An entry level glass surfboard or an epoxy surfboard may be a better alternative.
The reason epoxy is popular for an entry level surfer is that it is very buoyant and it is very durable. These two factors provide a stable platform to help paddle and the damage that inevitably happens when learning is dramatically decreased as this material is really strong. You will find many epoxy surfboards available in the market place today and many of these are for all types of surfing abilities from the first time surfer to the touring professional.

The final material is fibreglass. You will find glass boards being made for all types of surfers and these boards give you great feel and performance but they can lack durability. A less expensive glass surfboard will get you further down the line of learning to surf but you may experience some hold ups with ding repair and damage to your own body! Aat some point though, if you surf for long enough you will buy a glass surfboard shaped by a local shaper.
Also, don't forget that a used surfboard with the right dimensions could be a good board for the first time surfer.
We always have a selection of new
and used boards to suit every level of surfing and all budgets. And we
are (we really are!) trying to get pics of them on this page but they
seem to sell as quickly as we can grab a digital image!
Here's just a selection of what's
in store for you at Constantine Bay Surf Store this season:

Glass Flex
A major advance in moulded fin technology, Glass Flex has been formulated to replicate the flex and memory properties of a laminated fiberglass fin. Developed with chemical engineers, Glass Flex is a high fibreglass content composite using a new custom compounded resin formula delivering the benefits of increased stiffness and memory.
Glass Flex has many advantages over other composite fin materials. It is stiffer, with more positive flex pattern (nice tip flex, little base flex) and remarkable flex memory. The new natural color has a degree of translucency, replicating the aesthetic of the prototype G-10 material, preferred by elite surfers. The precision of the injection moulded process ensures the highest accuracy in both geometry and flex in each fin produced. The greatest advantage of the new Glass Flex material is that this technology is available as standard on all high quality production boards.

FCS K3 Fins
"The FCS K3 Fins fins are perfect for down the line walls and long turns. I actually started using the FCS K3 fins 3 years ago when I needed a better fin for the long walled waves at Rincon. Now I've been on the FCS K3 s for over three years. They have been my magic set. I originally designed the k2.1 with beach breaks and barrels in mind, and I still use them in these sorts of conditions. With the FCS K3 s and the k2.1 s you should be set for pretty much any sort of waves you find." - Kelly Slater

FCS Occy Fins
1999 World Champion Mark Occhilupo worked with us to develop this fin for radical power surfing. This fin has a lot of base area to help increase drive. The progressive flex pattern in the foil offers the right combination of hold and release through fully committed rail turns. We recommend this fin for medium to heavy weight surfers. This is a great fin if you like to throw everything you’ve got into your turns and cutbacks.

FCS AM2
A smaller version of Al Merrick's original template with Inside Foil Technology geared towards medium and smaller surfers. This Fin is enhanced with Performance Core Construction. This Fin set is finished in the new wet rub effect which is a matt finish. This allows water to be trapped in the fiber of the glass, hence allowing increased water flow, and an awesomely quick set of fins.

TC
Carbon Red LIne Fin set
The master of power surfing Tom Carroll's signature fin.
Designed to provide speed and quick rail to rail changes without slide.
A large base area providdes maximum drive to generate speed out of turns.
Reduced height and tip area allows the side fins to release sooner for
tighter arcs. This fin works well in all size of boards in all size waves.
The carbon lite construction ensures no flex, just drive.Base 41/2"

H2 Texallium Set
A hydrodynamic evolution in fin design and performance the H2 has been
proving really popular. Tested in tanks and refined by the world's best
surfers the H2s tempered elipitical shape and optimised foil delivers
extraordinary efficiency with less drag, more speed and drive.
The H2s side fins have been toed in slightly to increase manoueverabilty
and rail to rail transitions, and given more cant to push
the fin deeper into the wave face during turns creating even more speed.
The raked leading edge enables greater control through snaps, slides and
airs. These fins won Australian design awards.

FCS 3D Red Tip Centre Fin
With enhanced speed, lift and drive the 3D fin will take the standard
thruster up to a new dimension. The fins unique tip runs parrallel to
the board holding speed when up on a rail where traditional fins may pop
or stall. The fins delivers extra squirt during the second half of turns,
and increases lift and stability helping you glide over flat sections
and adding control in broken water. £52

MR TFX Tri-Fin set
The new MR TFX set features twin fins and a small stabliser fin. The fibreglass
fins provide performance and flex with the same feel as glass ons. MR
created a set of fins that have good holding power and lots of drive.
Even though the fins were developed primarily for the MR twin fins, they
provide a geat alternative to a variety of boards including fishes, or
for surfer who likes thier drive to come primarily off the front fins.

K-Flex Fin set
A unique fin with a balance between safety and performance. The innovative
K flex fin designed in conjunction with Kelly, features the high performance
K2.1 template with stiff composite core encased in shock absorbing elastomere
outer coating. Its a high performance fin with enhanced safety characteristics.
The softer edges not only absorb some impact, but also allow subtle changes
in the fins foil, smoothing the fins feel through the water. £49
The F Series
The F series delivers strong a ultra light fibreglass fin with a foam
core for surfers who feel too much flex in composite fins and not enough
in carbon lights. The progressive engineered flex is complimented by an
optisised asymetryic foil for maximum hydrodynamic efficiency. The result
is more speed, better response, increased accelaration and more hold and
drive through turns.

K 2.1 Fin set
Kelly designed these fins to gain better performance in a wider range
of conditions. The side and centre fins feature different templates, foil
and flex patterns. The side fins are larger and more upright with increased
flex. This helps to make for faster turns to get the most out of the wave.
The centre fin is smaller and stiffer to make each turn smoother and more
controlled. This combo offers slightly more manouverabilty than the original
K Fin; its faster off the top and can be ridden in any size surf.
