Latest News, Views and Gossip from February 2009:
Come on in, pull up a seat and make yourself
at home;
The New Year celebrations seem well and truly behind us now as if it was all in another millenium, with the spillages and damages of excess having been nicely swept away to be replaced by that hangover mix of toxic debt and economic meltdown.
And I trust that you have all fully gorged yourselves on the feast of surf that we have enjoyed since the start of the year? That is for the few of us left in the cold chill of a more typical British Winter! It does seem that even more than ever just about everybody has legged it for warmer climes this winter resulting in very quiet and peaceful lineups with truly magnificient waves proving that occasionally, unfortunately very occasionally, there is no place like home.
But it is true that temperatures have dropped more speedily and lower than for the past few seasons. Thank goodness for the quality of wetsuits that are now available. In the shop we are finding that the O'neill Psycho range and the Xcel Infiniti series are still the ones that are doing the best job this winter with the few PsychoFreaks that were available stoking those few who managed to get their hands on one. But it's reassuring that we still had the hardy few visitors who needed to see 2009 in by donning their shorties for their midwinter splash...!!
And in amongst the hardy souls enjoying the late evening pleasures on offer at Fistral was Micah Lester, picking maybe not the mildest winter as his first in the UK but probably the best for surf in a very long time.
Unlike mostly everyone else who all had better places to be while we shivered our way into frost ridden wetsuits.
Dom and Ashleigh slipped off to California to snuggle up to the ten thousand or so surfers on that coastline but managed to snag a few blistering and quiet waves for themselves:
I guess it beats climbing into that freezing wet wetsuit.
Meanwhile Cheyne and Sarah have made Coolangatta home for the winter months, slaving away at Snapper and burleigh and Rainbow Bay and Greenmount and still finding time to adopt a Ryan. Just before the Quiksilver circus rolls into town the Burleigh boys hold a single fin contest, all single fins, many classic old pigs but they rip on 'em. And Cheyne put a little film together:
Apparently the Goldie hasn't enjoyed an outstanding year but it has been warm and there have been waves. And then it's on to Indo for a month or two before returning to
the shackles of the surf school for another hopefully enjoyable season.
With Toby (Donachie) having another great time on the North Shore after a great year seeing him crowned "Quiksilver King of the Groms", step dad Adrian (Fluid Juice Surfboards) and mum, Lisa, joined him.
Ade's first Hawaiian adventure and it sounds like he was blown away by it all.
And quite a few of the younger guys managed to get to mythical Oahu this winter with Jak Smith having a riproaring time of it challenging some big and chunky waves before moving on to Indo. And big Congrats to Ed Smith on getting the English and British youngsters champs under his belt. The standards of the regular guys who surf around here just keep on being raised with Jak, Ben and Ed leading the way for a hungry young pack of local young rippers.
Ben sounds like he had a great trip down to visit family in Kiwi land, sloping off school for only a short time but still maintaining some sort of education.
And so, as winter turns slushily to Spring, so our thoughts drift towards those halcyon days that lay ahead.
Late afterwork sessions, shedding layer after layer of neoprene, lazy longboard days and maybe even the odd apres surf beach barbeque. It all still seems so long away but before we know it we'll all be switching to a slightly softer wax. And while the seemingly never ending, doom laden, economy chit chat will doubtless continue for a good while yet, it's worth considering that there are maybe just a few things left to enjoy that don't ask for any contribution other than your commitment, time and ultimately, enjoyment. luckily for us, surfing is one of those things. And ain't that the truth:
